Otamatea Sports Leadership Group Day 6

SUNSHINE!!!!!! Today has been a blast.. After a solid sleep last nite at Palm Tree Bay, we were gifted with a beautiful sunny still morning, were we swam, did our chores, had breakfast, and got thru the last of the school work. Some went off for fishing, still to no avail!

We moved the ship over to Army Bay, and had a wee bit of land time on the beach, and a picnic up at the old fortifications, with a view over forever… there was a definite summer feeling in the air, and quite a bit…

Otamatea Sports Leadership Group Day 5

Hi!!! We’re back in action with the computer now!!!!

This morning we had a super early wake up call from the anchor alarm, the weather had changed and we were dragging quickly onto a lee shore.. As soon as the engine started, all the trainees and crew were at action stations, donning wet weather gear to face the squalls that were coming thru… We had been anchored up at Outu Bay last nite, and the fishing and diving had gone on till sunset… Jak the legend came back with 6…

Otamatea Sports Leadership Group Day 2

Day 2 of the Otamatea Sports Leadership program began bright and early, with all of the trainees in the water by 7am, keen as beans, these guys slept in their togs!

There was a strong breeze this morning that put us on a lee shore at Orokawa Bay, and soon enough we were dragging our anchor through the mud. It was all action stations, and we weighed anchor and head out into the bay for a early morning cruise. Visited by a pod of bottlenose dolphins feeding in the bay, it was all…

From high ropes courses, bush survival, orientation, tramping, organising sports event, this team is well bonded and ready for action. youth 1111 day 6

Only one more sleep and we all have to go home. We started the day as normal, except just before breakfast we hauled anchor and headed for the black rocks. Eating breaky and doing the dishes under way presented new challenges in it self to the trainees. On arrival it was straight in to the water for a bit of snorkeling and collecting mussells and kina. This was made even cooler by the arrival of a fur seal that didn’t seem too interested in us but also remained quite unafraid. Tia and…

(te hole in te rock) Launch the dingy! and everybody was given a grand tour of the island’s various caves Tucker style. The trainees thought this was great! Where…

Lady Washington: Historical Seaport

Jobs: First Mate and Cook on Hawaiian Chieftain

The Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority is inviting applications for the positions of First Mate and Cook aboard the topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftain.

The First Mate is second in command and works closely with the Master to ensure safe and profitable operation of the vessel.  The First Mate provides direct oversight and is actively involved with ongoing maintenance, restoration, and crew training. The position starts March 24, 2012.

The Cook’s primary function is to provide the crew, both paid and volunteer, and occasionally paying passengers, with three nutritional meals per day plus snacks and beverages as appropriate. The position starts Feb. 18, 2012.

For a complete job description and for application materials, send email with your resume attached to Roxie Underwood, runderwood@historicalseaport.org or call 360-532-8611. More information about working aboard Hawaiian Chieftain is available at our website, www.historicalseaport.org/volunteering-jobs.

Fan Photo: Working Hard in Oxnard

Oxnard-area photographer Will Moneymaker sent us this photo of a hard-working crew member on the Lady Washington. You can see a set of his photos on our Facebook page. If you have photos to share, send them to photos@historicalseaport.org.

Fan Photo: Hawaiian Chieftain in Yaquina Bay

Photographer Vern Bartley emailed this image of the Hawaiian Chieftain sailing in Yaquina Bay, Ore., reminding us that we'll be in Coos Bay and Newport in May. Vern will be sailing on one of our port-to-port Passages, a great way to get a taste of 18th century sea travel. For the full schedule, visit the Public Sails Schedule on our website. If you have a photo to share, send it to photos@historicalseaport.org.

Fan Photo: Painterly Pic from Oxnard, Calif.

Photographer Bob Jensen of Canogo Park, Calif., submitted this photo of Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain during a Battle Sail near Oxnard on Saturday. The boats appear near the beach, but it's an artifact of the big 400 millimeter telephoto lens Bob used. He also applied a technique called "Venice Painting" to get the colors just so. If you have a photo of Lady Washington and/or Hawaiian Chieftain to share, send it to photos@historicalseaport.org.

New volunteers meet at Seaport HQ

New volunteers at the Historical Seaport went through an orientation session today at our headquarters in Aberdeen. The presentation included background on the organization, discussion of needs volunteers could fill, and some words of wisdom from Capt. JB Morrison, in the center of the photo towards the back. There's still time to sign up as a volunteer. Contact Jan Jorgenson, jjorgenson@historicalseaport.org, 800-200-5239. (Thanks to Jan for taking the picture.)
